Potty Training

I am in the throes of potty training. Help!

My 2.5 year old daughter has started potty training, and I guess it is going well. :)
She knows all the steps:

  • Pull down pants (pull-ups, diaper, underwear, whatever...)
  • Walk with it at her ankle to the potty/toilet
  • Sit on the potty/toilet
  • DO NOTHING
  • Ask/take toilet paper and wipe bottom
  • Flush the toilet/cover the potty
  • Wash hands
  • Dry hands
Will someone explain to me what is wrong?

A few days ago she actually defecated in the potty and told me.  I did not believe her, but to my surprise there it was, poo poo in the potty!  I was so excited, I cheered her on and gave her a Curious George sticker.  Several minutes after she urinated in her underwear!  Did I mention that she urinated on the floor while standing in front of the opened toilet another day?

I have gotten to the stage where I am tired of cleaning up urine from the floor (because I put her in underwear anticipating her using the potty).  The fact that she knows the steps involved in using the potty is comforting enough that I will wait a few more months to see if she gets it fully.  One thing is for sure, I will ramp up the training once the times gets closer to her 3rd birthday.  I will NOT have my child left behind because she is not potty trained!

Questions:

  • What have been your potty training experiences?
  • What advice do you have for me and other parents going through this?
